green[w83,jmc] Worries about a revival of aggressiveness in Germany

I fear that the German militarism and the aggressive spirit
may likely to revive in Germany and that the Greens may serve as
the vehicle for this revival. This may seem surprising in view
of the fact that the Greens are the party most strongly opposed
to the military establishment and nuclear weapons. Here are the
reasons for my 1983 March fear.

The basis for German aggression is the feeling that Germany
is put upon by others and needs to assert itself. The Greens seem
to be the vehicle for this spirit. If it makes them strong, e.g.
gives them power, then the pacificism can disappear very quickly.
For example, the counter culture in the Stanford area was oriented
towards non-violence, but flipped quickly when its ego was massaged
to arouse hatred.

At present the Soviets encourage the Greens because of their
opposition to the Pershing missiles. However, if they indeed go
in the direction I fear, then it will be possible to point out
to the Russians the disadvantages for them of an aggressive minded
Germany.

The incidents that have aroused my fears are the incident
of the publication of the lecture by the aged physicist Albrecht ...
and the anti-American article in Die Zeit that Erwin Friedlander
showed me. Both propose that the innocent Germans were put upon
by the wicked Jews and Americans. I don't know if the connection
with the Greens has yet been made, but the Green ideology is
a suitable vehicle for the ideology that Germany was and is the
innocent victim.
